The cost of return is your responsibility and we strongly recommend insuring the goods, as refunds cannot be issued for damaged or incomplete returns. If items show excessive handling, are missing components, or cannot be resold as new, a reasonable deduction may be made.

The Audio-Technica AT-VM740xML is a premium dual moving magnet phono cartridge from the VMx Series, designed for listeners looking to extract greater detail, clarity and spatial information from their vinyl collection. Combining Audio-Technica’s dual-magnet VM generator with a nude Microlinear stylus, the AT-VM740xML delivers highly accurate groove tracing together with an expansive, precisely defined stereo image.
Audio-Technica’s VM design uses two magnets positioned to correspond with the left and right channels of the stereo record groove. This arrangement closely mirrors the geometry of the cutter head used during record production, helping provide excellent channel separation and extended frequency response.
The AT-VM740xML features a nude Microlinear stylus designed to trace even very fine groove modulations with exceptional accuracy. Its advanced profile provides a more precise contact with the groove than conventional conical or elliptical designs, helping reveal subtle musical detail while maintaining excellent tracking performance.
The stylus is mounted to a tapered aluminium-pipe cantilever. By reducing mass towards the stylus tip, the tapered design allows the cantilever to respond rapidly to groove movements, improving transient response and helping the cartridge reproduce music with greater immediacy and definition.
Inside the cartridge, Audio-Technica uses paratoroidal coil construction with two coils per channel. This improves generating efficiency, while a centre shield plate positioned between the left and right channels helps reduce crosstalk and preserve a clear, stable stereo image.
The VMx generation also introduces PCUHD - Pure Copper Ultra High Drawability - wire for the cartridge coils. Audio-Technica has reduced the number of coil turns compared with previous designs, helping lower electrical mass and improve transient response while retaining the tonal richness and natural presentation expected from a high-quality moving-magnet cartridge.
The generator is housed within a substantial die-cast aluminium body designed to suppress unwanted vibration and resonance. Threaded mounting inserts are built directly into the cartridge body, allowing installation with just two screws and making setup particularly convenient on tonearms with integrated headshells.
With a 3.2mV output and standard 47kΩ recommended loading, the AT-VM740xML is compatible with conventional moving-magnet phono stages. Its removable stylus assembly also allows straightforward replacement and provides compatibility with most alternative AT-VMx Series styli, giving owners the option to experiment with different stylus profiles in the future.
